Preparing for Life After High School at Lakeside High School

  • Lakeside High School 5909 Washington 291 Nine Mile Falls, WA, 99026 United States (map)

The Arc of Spokane’s Advocacy & Family Support is excited to announce a one-evening version of Preparing for Life After High School!

The Preparing for Life After High School program is designed to help parents navigate the sometimes-complex support system for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and create a richer life for their child. During this workshop, we will give you the tools to support your child in living a life filled with dignity, choice, and opportunity! Learn from a team of experts who will continue to be available for support and helpful resources through graduation and beyond. It’s never too early to start thinking about next steps, so parents of students 14 and up are encouraged to attend.

Topics Include:

  • Intro to person-centered planning

  • The importance of self-advocacy

  • Legislative issues relevant to people with IDD and their families

  • Supported decision making

  • Alternatives to guardianship

  • Understanding DDA and SSI

  • Parent/caregiver supports

  • Transition programs/Adulting 101

  • Supported employment

  • Healthy relationships

Separate activities for young adults and siblings will be provided - feel free to bring them along!
Registration for the event is required, as there is limited space. Dinner will be provided for all!
