Volunteering with Residential Support Services

REQUIREMENTS

  • Volunteers must work with people with developmental disabilities in a positive and respectful manner.
  • All volunteers must pass a criminal background check, which typically takes 2 to 8 weeks to process.
  • Hours of operation for the Community Access program are between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

POSITIONS

Companions should consult with in-home staff to decide activities that will best benefit the residents of each home. Activities might include playing a musical instrument or dancing, sing-a-longs, reading to residents, taking walks or other one-on-one activities. Companions may also accompany individuals with staff to appoinments, shopping, or other recreational events in the community

Companions may be required to push someone in a wheelchair for short to moderate distances. Hours of service may vary from person to person or house to house. Contact the volunteer coordinator for details. Because many of our constituents respond best to a familiar face, this position is best suited to volunteers who can serve on a regular basis.

Home Care Aides assist with special projects in the home, such as yard work, painting and minor home repair. Volunteers should be able to perform physical labor, have some knowledge of residential structures and a working knowledge of basic home maintenance and repair.
