Volunteering with Homeownership Opportunities

REQUIREMENTS

  • Volunteers must work with people with developmental disabilities in a positive and respectful manner.
  • All volunteers must pass a criminal background check, which typically takes 2 to 8 weeks to process.
  • Hours of operation for the Community Access program are between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

POSITIONS

Advisory Board Members provide insight and direction for our Homeownership Opportunities program and are an important part of its future success. Consequently, members should have a good knowledge of (or be willing to learn about) issues related to homeownership for people with developmental disabilities.

Board members with a knowledge of banking are especially needed, although experience in home inspection and construction is also helpful. Homeowners with a developmental disability, or relatives of a homeowner with a developmental disability may have a unique insight into the program and are also encouraged to apply.

Post-purchase Home Maintenance Instructors present information on basic home care and repair to people with developmental disabilities in a classroom setting. Topics might include changing furnace filters, repairing window screens, changing faucet washers or other basic home repairs. Instructors should be patient and able to present information and answer questions clearly.
