Volunteering at The Arc Community Center
REQUIREMENTS
- Volunteers must work with people with developmental disabilities in a positive and respectful manner.
- All volunteers must pass a criminal background check, which typically takes 2 to 8 weeks to process.
- Hours of participation are between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, except dances and the Variety Show, which are held on weekend evenings.
POSITIONS
Craft Aides help Community Center participants create projects by gathering supplies, providing encouragement and helping with fine motor skills such as gluing or cutting. A two-hour minimum contribution is preferred.
Hobby Specialists share their unique skills in cake decorating, needlework, exercise, painting, knot tying or whatever! If it's fun and hands-on, we'll try it. You supply the know-how and we'll supply the material.
Companions establish a friendship with one or more participants by taking an interest in his or her likes and interests, taking walks, helping write letters or just talking.
Dance Chaperones encourage participation at our monthly Community Center dances, serve refreshments or help with decorations. Dances are held on Saturday evenings between 6:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Variety Show Helpers are an essential part of our yearly Variety Show, an evening of fun in which Community Center participants get to display their talents. Helpers serve as costume designers, make-up artists, dance instructors, coreographers or anything else that might be needed.
Guest Speakers share their favorite topics with Community Center participants. Topics that invite hands-on learning are especially welcome. Small groups are usually the norm and speakers should expect a very casual atmosphere.
