Volunteering with Community Access

REQUIREMENTS

  • Volunteers must work with people with developmental disabilities in a positive and respectful manner.
  • All volunteers must pass a criminal background check, which typically takes 2 to 8 weeks to process.
  • Hours of operation for the Community Access program are between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

POSITIONS

Companions accompany participants on outings into the community which may include window shopping and a snack at the mall, a picnic in the park, viewing exhibits at the MAC, seeing animals at a pet store, a game of bingo or swimming. Volunteers will remain in the company of an Arc employee at all times and encourage participants with various tasks, including pushing wheel chair for short to moderate distances.

Job Aides help participants develop job skills by giving helpful direction, positive encouragement or other assistance as needed. Some participants have specific work-related goals to accomplish. Consequently, Job Aides should provide direction, if necessary, while allowing participants to work and learn independently. Volunteers will remain in the company of an Arc employee at all times and should be able to:

  • Have reliable transportation
  • Take direction from Arc staff
  • Be a positive role model
  • Help participants accomplish a task
  • Help participants eat or drink as necessary
