How "severe" is my son or daughter’s condition?

An initial diagnosis says very little about what your child might be able to accomplish in his or her life. Just as there are lots of causes, there is also a very broad range of effects. Many parents are given a "worst case" scenario upon discovery of a disabling condition, but the reality is often quite different. Some parents report being told that their son or daughter would never walk or talk to find them, 25 years later, holding a steady job and living on their own. Although this isn’t always the case, it illustrates the need to be cautious about initial medical prognoses.

One of the most important factors about your child’s development is your own expectations. Don’t limit yourself or your child to a worst case scenario. See all that your child can do, rather than just the things he or she can’t, and build on those successes. Lots of parents have proven gloomy medical prognoses dead wrong. Make every effort to be one of them.
