What is a developmental disability?

Once known as mental retardation, "developmental disability" is the preferred term used to describe a number of medical conditions occurring before age 18 that cause delayed or disordered brain development. Autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and epilepsy are the most commonly known causes of developmental disability, although there are hundreds of different medial diagnoses. Brain trauma can also result in a developmental disability. For administrative purposes, the State of Washington considers anyone with an IQ score of 69 or below as having a developmental disability.
