In Loving Memory

Friends and family are invited to celebrate the life of Dan Obenland, a long-time Spokane resident and recipient of independent living support from The Arc of Spokane. Dan passed away at his home on Thursday, July 17, 2008 of natural causes.  He was 43.

Born in Garfield County, Washington on October 28, 1964, Dan had lived at Lakeland Village in Medical Lake, Washington before moving into a private home supported by The Arc.  Although he did not speak, Dan had a strong personality and was an excellent self-advocate who found creative ways to communicate his wishes effectively.

Dan got along well with his housemates and held various jobs in the community over the years.  When he wasn't working, Dan enjoyed going on trips around town, hanging out in the park and watching baseball, hockey and other sporting events.  He also enjoyed a cruise which Arc residents took on Lake Coeur d'Alene in the summer of 2007.  When he didn't have anything else to do, Dan would brouse the ads in the telephone book.  His favorite outfit to wear was black sweat pants, a white T-shirt and his tennis shoes, which had to be on the wrong feet and untied--it's just the way he liked them.

Thanks for letting us get to know you, Dan.
